1943: Haile Selassie, the Emperor of Ethiopia, officially declared war on Italy during World War II. This marked the culmination of Ethiopia’s resistance against Italian occupation, which began in 1935.

1994: The Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) captured the capital city, Kigali, effectively ending the Rwandan Genocide. The RPF’s victory led to the establishment of a new government and the start of the country’s long process of recovery.

1974: Guinea-Bissau gained independence from Portugal. This marked the end of Portuguese colonial rule in the country and the beginning of a new era of self-governance.
