On May 17th in African history, several notable events have taken place. Here are a few examples:

  1. 1990: The World Health Organization (WHO) removed South Africa from its list of countries with active transmission of Guinea worm disease. This was a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to combat the disease.

2. 2004: Mozambique and South Africa signed an agreement to construct a new bridge over the Maputo River, connecting the towns of Matola and Catembe. The bridge, known as the Maputo-Catembe Bridge, was completed in 2018 and is the longest suspension bridge in Africa.

3. 2010: The African Union suspended Niger’s membership following a military coup that ousted President Mamadou Tandja. The suspension was lifted in 2011 after Niger transitioned back to civilian rule.

4. 2014: The African Union deployed the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) to support the Somali government in its fight against the extremist group Al-Shabaab. AMISOM has played a significant role in stabilizing Somalia and combating terrorism in the country.
