My Review of the book titled Half of a Yellow Sun by author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

The renowned Nigerian award-winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's work is always first rate and exceptionally brilliant. This Novel was published in 2006 and her second published novel.

The 400 pages novel is very detailed. Adichie depicts how atrocious and traumatizing war can be. Narrating the ugly and tragic story of the people of Biafra in the Nigerian Civil War, sometimes known as the Biafran War, that lasted from 1967 until 1970.

The story centers around a Nigerian teenage boy named Ugwu taking a job as a houseboy for prominent academic professor, Odenigbo. Odenigbo is in love with Olanna, a local girl who comes from a wealthy family. They fall in love, and Olanna moves in with Odenigbo and Ugwu. The postcolonial novel now jumps ahead to the late 1960s to the historical conflict that Half of a Yellow Sun revolves around, the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970). Exposing the violence that had been directed towards the Igbo community. Many Igbo people felt they did not belong in Nigeria. The civil war was brutal, leading to many lost lives and creating many refugees. Biafra finally surrendered in 1970 and was absorbed back into Nigeria. Exploring how conflict impacts both a country and the people within it. She also shows how easily ordinary, peaceful people can be lured into it. ~Ugwu forced to fight in the civil war.~ as a case study.

I also enjoyed this novel in a drama film directed by Biyi Bandele - A must watch!

It's a 5 star book for me and a worthwhile read for anyone interested in Nigerian Civil War history, Biafran agitation, postcolonial trauma and love without war.
