HOW I STOPPED GAMBLING (#BET9JA)

“I started gambling in 2011, after getting acquainted with a friend from my village who lived in Mgbuoshimini, Rumueme, Port Harcourt. According to him, he was an expert in forecasting weekly pool draws; and I was easily influenced into betting heavily on "bankers", but there were hardly any substantial winnings for one to live on.

The aftermath of my indulgence in pool betting left me depressed and confused, and equally challenged my religious beliefs; as there were stories told in pool offices of how the pool results were controlled from the spiritual realm, and the things that one could do if winning consistently was his target. I also heard stories of how mentally deranged people could give "sure games" to people and they would win.

I became addicted to pool betting and would not listen to any advice from anyone urging me to stop. Since I was not the one forecasting the "draws", I was able to face my studies without distractions, but the emotional trauma of losing would always come on Saturday evenings.

I continued until I realized that I could not make any meaningful life from betting, so I made a decision to stop, and since June 2011, I have not staked a dime on pool. But that was just the beginning.

The real addiction to gambling came when NAIRABET, Bet9ja and other sports betting companies surfaced in Nigeria. At first, I ignored it, but when I discovered that they had different betting options instead of just "draw", I ventured into forecasting in 2015. With my phone, I'd visit different websites to find every information on recent performances of teams to solidify my betting decisions, but as usual, there would always be a "cut one or two".

I believed that I could win the millions that others were winning. I registered with the companies so that I could bet with my phone at any time of the day instead of going to their offices. Honestly, I had few winnings, but they could not be compared with the heavy losses I had everyday. It was difficult to give up, but it took the grace of God for me to quit in 2019. Every gambler is under psychological and emotional stress, and they feel defeated when something they can't control does not go in their favour.

Gambling affected my relationship with others because I felt I could make any amount of money I needed without asking anyone for help. I did not quit with my strength, I asked God for help and today, I am completely free. As a football fan, I now enjoy matches without the panic that comes with betting money on them. Gambling as you will discover in this book is addictive and destructive, and does not have any long-term positive impact on humanity, and that's why God does not bless the hustle that go with it.

Conclusively, any money earned through gambling always end up in the accounts of the betting companies, leaving the bettor impoverished and frustrated”

We are creatures of habit. The more we do anything, the more it becomes routine. One bad habit leads to others, and a bad habit often becomes a psychological addiction, which is enslavement. God wants you to be free from bad habits and addictions.

It’s easy to see why gambling is addictive. A win is a thrill that whets the appetite for more. A loss is often followed by more playing in hopes of recouping the loss. And, for many, it is escapism from reality and responsibility.
